STYLE GURU STYLE: That ’70s Show

The flowing fabrics, earthy patterns and fringe, so much fringe, of the ‘70s are coming back for fall 2015. The clothes on the Burberry Prorsum fall ready-to-wear runway looked like they could have come straight from the era of bohemian-chic. The ‘70s is one of my favorite eras for fashion inspiration, so I was so excited to incorporate this trend into a laid back outfit perfect for a day of classes.

Caftans were the focal points of several outfits in the Burberry Prorsum show, so I began with this lightweight, pale pink caftan I got from H&M a few years ago. I love how it drapes and love the crochet detail on the hem and sleeves. I paired the caftan with gray corduroys because corduroy is an essential fall fabric. Because fringe was a staple of the ‘70s, for shoes I chose a pair of fringe, moccasin boots. Many of the models in the Burberry Prorsum show wore round sunglasses, so I slid on a pair of Free People sunglasses. I love how the oversized shape makes them more modern. For accessories, I chose a clay pendant and silver rings for extra bohemian touches.

The key to drawing inspiration from a different era is to not wear too many retro items at once. If you go overboard, you may look like you are wearing a costume. Instead, pick one or two vintage-inspired (or actually vintage) items, and pair them with more modern items. For example, if you want to wear a ‘70s-inspired outfit, try a floral maxi dress with a pair of lace-up boots.

Another way to a rock a retro outfit is to keep all of the items in the outfit fairly simple. In this outfit, I wore several bohemian-influenced items, but avoiding patterns and bright colors makes the overall look less overwhelming.

Get My Look: 1. A caftan. 2. Fringe boots. 3. Round sunglasses.
