STYLE GURU STYLE: Suburban Gothic

This outfit was partially inspired by Maison Margiela’s latest collection, MM6. The high class textiles and strange styling influenced me to create a look that was slightly preppy, but with a dark color palette. In this collection, soft, expensive fabrics were paired with leather rain boots, lengthy statement zippers, and oversized belts. The looks were sort of ominous, characterized by contrasting colors and large, assertive accessories.

I liked the bright shade of pastel green Margiela used in his collection, so I picked out a dress with a similar shade in it. Instead of going with the overly long sleeves from the MM6 collection, I decided to eliminate sleeves entirely and select a tube dress. The tube dress I’m wearing is made of a sweater material, similar to the garments from the collection. I like the idea of pairing together two completely different fashion concepts, so I went for a suburban housewife look with a gothic overtone. I accomplished this by wearing ankle strap flats made from a patent leather material. These shoes are a feminine classic, but the material they are made from give them an edgy appearance. Another component of the outfit, which deserves an explanation, is my sterling silver cursive necklace. I had this necklace custom made to say “Loathing” rather than my name, like the usual purpose of these necklaces. I thought it was kind of sarcastic and humorous and it fits with the theme of the outfit perfectly.

For my other accessories, I wore oversized circular black sunglasses, a ram skull necklace and a simple rhinestone ring. I think the sunglasses were a great addition for the purpose of making the outfit appear more suburban.

Get My Look: 1. A sweater tube dress. 2. Ankle strap flats. 3. Circular black sunglasses. 4. Simple rhinestone ring.
