STYLE GURU STYLE: Stay Warm (Fur)ever

After three and a half years spent in New Orleans, it seems my body has forgotten how to deal with a typical New England winter. As you can imagine, being home in Boston for break has posed a challenge for me, especially now that temperatures have dropped below freezing. Luckily fashion trends were on my side this season as many designers showcased fluffy fur coats guaranteed to keep the wearer warm in the coldest climates. Styles ranged from shearling lining and cuffs to oversized full fur jackets in every color.

Tom Ford’s fall 2015 collection featured a variety of furry coats paired with pencil skirts, pants and dresses. I loved his combination of animal prints, denim and leather that worked together to create edgy, yet wearable outfits. Typically, I lean towards his more streamlined looks that focus less on pattern and color play and more on a variance of textures and materials. Because of this, I was inspired by a simple look from the show, featuring a big fur coat, black pencil skirt, tall boots and gold sunglasses.

Aside from the current trendiness of fur coats, I’d argue that they’re a staple in the closet of every girl that has to face freezing cold winter weather. I bought a faux fur coat to stay environmentally friendly while still getting the same look. The fall runways featured many colorful fur coats that I fell in love with, but I chose a neutral color to make my coat more versatile. I can throw this coat over almost every outfit and I immediately feel like a cool independent woman who is ready to take on the (cold) world.

Because my coat is a bit oversized and adds a lot of volume to my small body, I paired it with simple black jeans tucked into leather thigh high boots. These boots are another staple in my wardrobe because I can wear them with everything from shorts with tights to a cozy sweater dress and tall socks. Tom Ford styled many of his models with statement earrings and necklaces, both of which I love, but I chose to wear gold sunglasses like the ones shown in a few of his looks. My sunglasses were enough of a statement on their own so jewelry was unnecessary.

Get My Look: 1. Neutral faux fur coat. 2. Black over-the-knee boots. 3. Gold round sunglasses.
