STYLE GURU STYLE: So Shifty

Shift dresses have become one of the most popular dresses this summer. Before this summer, I am not even sure if I knew what shift dress meant. Some of you may be wondering, “What is a shift dress?” A shift dress is a short dress that lacks detailed shaping. These were first made famous in the ’60s. Whether you are wearing it for date night or for sorority recruitment, a shift dress is a great dress to have. A shift dress is not only modest and classy, but it is also very flattering on most body types. I mean, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wore them, so need I say more?

I have never really understood runway fashion or been able to see myself wearing anything that comes down the runway. However, when I saw Valentino’s resort 16 collection, I took a more preppy take on this collection instead of a bohemian-inspired look. I paired my Lilly Pulitzer shift dress with a simple pair of sandals and a solid tote bag. I kept my accessories to the minimum due to the powerful print and color of this tea-length dress. By pairing this busy print with a neutral purse, it allows the colors in the dress to really pop. Not really into prints? Try a more solid or neutral dress and pair it with a statement necklace and a colorful bag or shoes to take that dress to the next level.

This overall look is casual and preppy. By adding wedges and a clutch, you can easily take this from day to night. Plus, it is so much easier to carry around a smaller bag when trying to act like we know how to walk in heels.
