STYLE GURU STYLE: Rock the Garden

A sunny weekend spent at Rock the Garden called for finding the perfect festival outfit. The picturesque concert takes place each year on the grassy slopes of the Walker Sculpture Garden. Sunday’s line-up included The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, JD McPherson, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Babes in Toyland and Modest Mouse.

Unsure of what to wear, I turned to Style.com for inspiration and fell in love with the Marchesa Notte resort 2016 collection. The line emulates the designs of Morocco and Islamic tiling, all in a refreshing white and blue color palette with touches of blush. The feminine frocks would not be out of place for a swanky summer in the Hamptons, but the same colors and concepts can lead to a fresh festival wear outfit. (And perhaps a much needed break from the fringe crop top, gladiator sandal combo).

To create my look I started with a navy romper with scalloped edges. A romper is a go-to of mine for festivals because it’s breezy and light-weight, but also won’t show the rest of the crowd your bum when things get breezy (but if that’s your thing, all the more power to you). Additionally, rompers lend to comfortable lounging in the grass and a no-fuss feel compared to wearing multiple layers. Their only downfall comes to difficult bathroom breaks, be prepared to fully strip when you head to the loo. Similar to the Marchesa Notte collection, the navy color added a touch of nautical flair, without being as harsh as black (which is generally a concert go-ers staple). Plus, the blue tone pops against tan skin, showing off your summer glow.

The outfit felt complete with a pair of black leather ankle strap sandals, as not to be too matchy-matchy. I would definitely recommend going with a pair of flats at any outdoor festival as to avoid tripping over a pair of heels walking up the hilly grass. I also threw on a simple ring and necklace for accessories and painted my nails a bold cherry red to give a pop of color. I loved the accidental essence of Americana with the red and blue combo.

For hair and makeup, I kept it fairly simple and carefree. It’s best to pick styles that will withstand hours out in the sun without touch ups. And, as always, remember your SPF!

Rock the Garden ended up being blazingly hot, but an all -round beautiful day out at the Walker Art Center—I can’t think of anything better than listening to the indie rock sounds of Modest Mouse as the sun goes down.

Get My Look: 1. Flirty romper. 2. Ankle strap sandals. 3. Bright nail polish.
