STYLE GURU STYLE: Professional Weekender

This particular look is inspired by the 2014 fall ready-to-wear kate spade new york collection, a line that mixes prints to create ensembles ideal for a leisurely weekend away or in the city. kate spade is loved by young professionals and creatives alike. Featuring pieces in cobalt blue to a bright yellow, it is clear that a key attribute of this collection is versatility. Many other brands seem to stick to a specific color palette, especially in fall collections where we often see a lot of neutral tones and variations of black and white. But this line does not confirm to the mold. It offers pieces and ensembles that would fit into a young woman’s full schedule, from the many tamed minimal office-appropriate looks to the more print heavy ones perfect for a lunch with friends.

I used my staple white collared button-down as my blank canvas for the entire look. For the first layer of colour, I slipped on a crisp blue light wash jean jacket. Borrowing from the pattern mixing seen in the kate spade collection, I tried my hand at the technique and added a dressy leopard print coat to an otherwise grungy ensemble. The coat is in stark contrast to the tattered look of the jacket and stays true to the clean aesthetic that Kate Spade so beautifully and consistently produces. I recently purchased both these pieces. Styling them together made a lot of sense after seeing them hanging side by side in my closet and noticing how their colors flattered each other. Distressed denim jackets and leopard print were certainly not part of my high school style repertoire. They are two key additions to my ever-changing closet.

My camera, notes and textbooks all enclosed in a posh cocoon—it is not every day you come across an affordable item that facilitates both your academic needs and pastimes. My accessory of choice this week is a black crocodile print handbag that is as practical as it is charming. It has become a staple piece I have integrated into my school wardrobe as well as my day-to-day look.

To complete the appearance, I opted for my go-to pair of black jeans that play “comfort disguised as business casual” so well. I cuffed them at the ankles so they would not fall gracelessly atop my boots.

Wrapped in denim, leopard over the shoulders and crocodile in tow—the Kate Spade fall line has surely inspired me to explore combinations I would not have otherwise attempted.

Get My Look: 1. A leopard print coat. 2. A crocodile print handbag. 3. A blue jean jacket.
