STYLE GURU STYLE: Not Your Average Tights

When I came upon the Proenza Schouler fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I was excited to see the incorporation of patterned tights on the runway. This is usually a rare occurrence since the impeccably styled models typically waltz down the catwalk bare-legged and sans any type of  outerwear undergarments. Excited by the use of uniquely designed hosiery, I was inspired to replicate the runway trend into a wearable street style look.

Long gone are the days when I detested having to wear tights with my skirts and dresses. As a child, tights represented a type of strict rule that adults forced onto little girls with no real explanation or justification. “Why do I have to wear tights with this dress or skirt?”, I used to ask myself. My preference for tights has evolved over the years, and I am now a bonafide tights lover. From printed tights to classic opaque tights, I find any opportunity to incorporate them into my wardrobe. I would describe my style as fundamentally classic with an infusion of quirkiness in the details, so this was the perfect trend for my own personal style preferences. Plus, it is an opportunity to display my newfound treasure: alphabet tights!

Printed tights can add a quirky detail to any outfit while also acting as a sort of statement piece. So for the base of your look, start with a pair of unique tights with a patterned design. To maximize the view of the tights, choose a structured mini skirt and a simple blouse.
