STYLE GURU STYLE: Mix It All Together

Prints of all sorts—florals, polka-dots, stripes and many more—are constantly seen on the runway. They’re a break from the monochromatic and make life more fun. But it takes an ambitious designer to combine two radically different prints, especially for a runway show. Of course, there is no one better to do so than Michael Kors. The Michael Kors’ pre-fall 2015 show drew in my attention when he took the daring move of combining stripes and florals. I was particularly drawn to Look four, in which he effortlessly combined a striped blue and black turtleneck with a black and white flowered skirt. The casual turtleneck balances out the dressiness of the skirt. What ties the two pieces together, at least for me, is the black used throughout the whole outfit.

In an attempt to re-create the Michael Kors look, I took a more summery approach. While the black in the turtleneck and the skirt bring the piece together, I opted for brighter colors to match the season. For my outfit, the orange is what ties everything together. Having a stripe of orange at the bottom of the skirt made it a sure match with the orange-and-periwinkle-striped top. The skirt is one of my favorite pieces I own, something I have fun wearing with the dainty flowers looking as if they are straight from a watercolor. The flowing skirt juxtaposes the tighter-fitting top, creating a balance between the two. I finished up my outfit with a pair of my comfiest shoes (surprisingly comfy!), a kate spade purse and a watch. By keeping my accessories minimal, it is obvious that the focus is on the different patterns.

Get My Look: 1. A floral print skirt. 2. A striped shirt. 3. Timeless (figuratively) watch.
