July has commenced, and summer is in full swing. While most Fashionistas are clad in bright colors, tropical prints and bohemian festival wear, here I am garbed in monochromatic black and white. I promised myself that I would venture into brighter color families once summer started, but alas, grays and whites are my home. Not to worry, because even though I’m stranded in my color comfort zone, I believe I’ve found my new go-to look: the high-waisted midi skirt and crop top combo.
This look was inspired by Wes Gordon‘s fall ready-to-wear collection. The collection was filled with knits, silks and furs in hues of black, gray and white. Mock turtleneck blouses and midi skirts and dresses also grazed the runway.
The look I wanted to recreate was this knitted skirt and fur sweater combination, opting to swap the heavier fabrics for more summer friendly ones. I began putting together my outfit with a high-waisted black jersey midi skirt. As a petite girl, I have always steered away from skirts that hit mid-calf as I didn’t think they would complement my frame. However, I fell in love with this piece, and I was determined to create a look that would work for me. I paired the midi with a relaxed cropped T-shirt, and I found that the contrasting lengths of the two pieces flattered my shorter frame. I chose to wear this combo with the ubiquitous white sneaker of the summer. The shoes lend a casual vibe to the entire look, and add contrast to the darker shades of the skirt and top. I completed my look with a pair of blue mirrored sunglasses and a stack of simple gold bracelets.
Whether you’re going out for brunch, strolling around the city or going on a coffee run for your work mates, the simple combination of a high-waisted midi skirt and a crop top gives you an instantly polished look. Play with different silhouettes, prints and textures to find the midi that best fits your style, and experiment with a variety of cuts and patterns to find your perfect crop.
