STYLE GURU STYLE: Miami Oh My

Miami is one of the most interesting places in the world, due to its diverse culture tied to Central America and Cuba, art deco architecture and beach town retro feel. Miami fashion is rooted to its city; a conglomerate of decades, ethnicities, prints and patterns. My look was particularly inspired by the color schemes and silhouettes of the clothing featured in the hit ‘80s show Miami Vice. Oversized and boxy cuts in diversified patterns and pastel colors for instance were featured heavily for men and women. Though ‘80s style is indicative of the past, there’s no reason why it can’t work in 2015! I’m a firm believer in decade recycling; it makes for a well-rounded individual and stylish closet. Creating an outfit that features pattern mixing in bubblegum hues can make a look appear high fashion with little effort on your part. This is one of my favorite ways currently to create updated looks from items in my closet that would otherwise be thrown to the curb.

Many designers seek inspiration for their collections from past styles that have previously been pushed to the back of closets. Charlotte Ronson is not exempt from this formulaic trend mechanism. This is illustrated through the Charlotte Ronson spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. As I mentioned, pattern mixing in light pops of color is indicative of the ‘80s; though not exclusive to this time period, it is clear that Ronson’s inspiration did in fact look to the past. Look 15 in particular illustrates style that has gone through a metamorphosis through time. Similar to many of the looks in this collection, I used a monochromatic color palette in my look featuring aquatic blues reminiscent of the seaside. The style of my outfit also reflects this collection through the breezy quality of how the fabric drapes over the body. This look is not only airy and stylish, but it is also practical for the heat in the peak of summer.

My look consists of a striped tank top and trapeze shorts in a Hawaiian print. I added black wraparound sandals with a contrasting orange sole, a hammered silver statement necklace and modern cat eye sunglasses to create a look that is truly reflective of Miami style.

Observe your surroundings this summer. Be inspired by buildings, people and nature; take it all in and incorporate it into your outfit and you’ll have a look that isn’t just thrown together, but one that makes you recall the place where you were truly inspired.
