Textures are my favorite part of fall and winter fashion. The variety of fabrics and materials that can be worn in the colder months is almost limitless, even in my warmer home state of Florida. Every year when November rolls around, I pull out my thick knits, fuzzy vests and suede accessories, reveling in them until about mid-March.
While looking for runway collections to write this month’s article about, I stumbled upon the pre-fall 2016 set from Alberta Ferretti and fell in love. The whole collection consists of subdued earth tones, animal print accents and of course, a plethora of various textures. As we head into the last of the winter months, I figured that an ode to my favorite aspect of chilly weather was appropriate, especially when my look emulates such a gorgeous runway collection.
I used a simple brown suede skater skirt as a base for this look. The color reflects many of the looks in Ferretti’s collection. I paired it with a cream turtleneck sweater, a pair of opaque gray tights and a pair of olive colored thigh-high boots. I went for a set of subtle earth tones with a slight pop of color courtesy of the boots, which add a sleek feel to the look when they transition to the tights. To top the whole look off, I threw on dark brown faux fur vest with knit edges. Not only does the vest tie the ensemble together, it is also reminiscent of Ferretti’s animal motif. The vest shown here is boxy and oversized and I have found that it adds flavor to almost any fall/winter look. I usually pair it with a structured button down for a relaxed touch or with a flowy floral top to add to the romantic feel of the outfit.
I sought to combine as many of Ferretti’s textures as I could in this look such as sleek suede, a chunky knit and of course, the fur vest with knit accents. To continue with the animalistic theme in the runway collection, I added a long gold necklace with a metallic tooth-shaped pendant. I love pairing high necklines with long necklaces for a nice contrast in length.
