STYLE GURU STYLE: Layer-Chic

One of the coolest things about being a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista has been delving into the educational aspect of fashion. This summer I was really able to do my reading and research about an industry that I have loved since I was a little girl. I read the required books, went through every fashion magazine I could get my hands on, attended CollegeFashionista events and became much better acquainted with designers. By immersing myself into the culture that is fashion, I experimented with my clothes and learned what makes me feel happy and confident.

I drew a lot of inspiration from Madewell’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. I loved how the garments in the collection had sleek lines and an air of sophistication while maintaining Madewell’s signature laidback and quirky style. Each look had a perfect balance of femininity and masculinity and layered different fabrics and prints to achieve cohesive outfits. I personally love layered looks; I think it adds depth to an outfit and makes it more interesting in general.

Look 19 was what I based my outfit off of. What I really wanted to accomplish was maintaining the integrity of the outfit and incorporating key aspects of the outfit while altering it to make it appropriate for the summer and early fall, when it is still warm out. This look was all about layering so I added my own personal spin by layering my gray Urban Outfitters pullover sweater over a lightweight pinstriped button-down shirt by Ralph Lauren. Staying in the same color family, I opted for my burgundy-red shorts from Free People and kept it casual with a pair of patterned Sperry Top-Siders. For accessories, I added a patterned scarf perfect for the warm weather and a hat that was similar to the hat featured in look one.

Overall, I think this look embodies the relaxed and cool trademark look that Madewell represents. I cannot wait until fall is in full swing so I can continue to experiment with layering.
