STYLE GURU STYLE: Hello, Velvet

Neutrals are always my favorite colors to work with when it comes to fashion. Though I have to say, I usually stick to white, black and gray; anyone who knows me will vouch that those are my absolute favorite colors. But, I noticed a theme of a lot of tan and white in spring 2016 collections, probably because they are lighter colors and better for spring.

So, I decided to create a little challenge for myself because tan is a color I generally am not too fond of. I set off on a mission to find a runway look with this tan and white color paletteĀ that I actually liked and could use as inspiration to recreate an outfit of my own. Look 36 from Dennis Basso’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection caught my eye. Now, while I did not do a 100 percent recreation of this look (it’s still a little chilly for hot shorts!), I let the color and textures inspire me.

I really liked that this runway look mixed different textures. For my own look, I started with a pair of tan, velvet jeans. Let me just clarify that the only reason I didn’t buy them in black is because they were too lint-prone. Anyway, I really love that these jeans are a nice change from classic blue denim. I paired these bottoms with a semi-sheer white top. Dennis Basso’s look included a lace top that was very girly. The top that I wore had a cut out back, which I thought was similar. AsĀ the top was semi-sheer, I decided to wear a black bralette underneath. So obviously this wouldn’t be a work appropriate outfit but it’s a nice for weekends or going out with friends. On my feet, I wore a pair of simple black boots. My favorite aspect of these boots is the quilted look on the back. I kept jewelry simple with a black statement necklace and a couple rings that I wear everyday. For a more dressy look, I could have added an open cardigan or a hat to this ensemble.

Get My Look: 1. A pair of velvet jeans. 2. A statement necklace. 3. Black boots.
