STYLE GURU STYLE: Go With The Flow

I have always been fascinated by old pictures of my mom. As an adult, she lived through four of the most fashionable eras and it showed in all of her photos. My favorite pictures of her came from the early 1970s and the 1980s; she looked great and her clothes were the best. The carefreeness of her go-go and flowy dresses, the fringes on her bags and jackets and the volume in her hair? It was all just way too cute.

I pull inspiration from many of her getups. I genuinely like the bohemian style of the ’70s era; it makes me think of the wind. The wind is just as free as many of those outfits. Whether it’s fringes or flowing frocks, the wind has blown the late-1960s/early-1970s back into fashion and Etro’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection is proof that boho is here to stay. For spring 2015, Etro went with the flow by designing several billowy, bohemian pieces.

Recently, loose clothes on women have been seen in either masculine-inspired clothes or in oversized sweaters. I’m very excited that everyone, instead of solely “hippies,” can now comfortably wear cute bohemian clothes. It has been seen on the runway, but the revamped trend has been made available in several stores and on their sites for everyday wear.

So how does one pull this look off without looking like a plastic bag drifting through the wind (as Katy Perry would say)? My outfit is one of many ways. Today’s ensemble consisted of a short, flowy dress I found online, my favorite Converse and a vintage Coach purse that my mum gave me.

My dress is the trendiest and loudest part of my outfit. With so much going on with the print, I tried to keep all my other pieces neutral (even my lipstick!). I wore Converse to make my look more casual, and a cross-body bag so that people would focus more on my dress. My main goal for today was to stay cool and comfortable, but I coincidentally ended up with this outfit and served afro-boho as I strutted downtown Brooklyn.

Get My Look: 1. A short flowy dress. 2. Converse. 3. Any crossbody bag.
