STYLE GURU STYLE: Destined for Denim

The denim shorts are a staple of summer and the warmer weather; however, the new and emerging trend is to pair the classic denim that we all know and love with the same denim top. I myself was weary and standoffish in my approach to this new trend for quite some time.

Denim was a main feature in the lineup of Francesco Scognamiglio’s resort 2016 show. One look that particularly stood out to me was his denim on denim look. I had seen it before on others, but until the runway show, I had no idea just how prominent this trend was becoming.

Walking down the streets of Chicago, I saw denim on denim almost everywhere. However, I was nervous as to whether or not I could pull off the look, especially in the hot summer months. I was worried that the denim on denim would be too harsh on my short stature. This is why I chose the classic scarf and flats. These elements played up the look while toning down the denim as well.

I believe the key to pulling off this look is by strategically choosing your shades of denim. The same shade for both top and bottoms was too much for me, however; I loved the contrast of dark wash skinny jeans paired with the light-wash denim button-down top and rolled-up sleeves. The stark contrast eases the intensity that a double denim look can create.

I dressed up my all-denim look by adding a scarf in a lighter fabric, (since it is summer) my favorite sunglasses, a trendy cross-body bag and my favorite ballet flats. This made my look both trendy and classic at the same time.
