STYLE GURU STYLE: Desert Dweller

The Kenzo Resort 2016 collection brings the essence of the desert to life. The looks draw inspiration from the dry dusty air and neutral tones of barren lands. When scrolling through this collection, I was so inspired by how the designers mimic the backdrops in their garments. In look 4, the pants almost completely replicate the texture of the rock in the background—such an interesting concept and one that I have not stumbled across recently.
The neutral tones and desert vibes are what I tried to translate from this collection into my own look. To do this, I first grabbed my small brown wool hat. The tan fabric of the hat was the perfect starting point when trying to achieve my neutral look. The shape of this hat helped protect my face from the sun, adding to the desert vibes I was trying to achieve. Next I threw on this Free People dress. The simple white pattern stays in my color scheme but also helps make the outfit more interesting. Sometimes when combining neutrals, you can run the risk of washing your self out and looking too boring. Adding a piece with a simple pattern like this dress can help solve that. As I continued getting dressed, I kept the desert dweller in mind. I thought, “What would someone in the hot sun all day wear?” My mind suddenly started jumping through images of the old west. I pictured cowboys in dusty clothes and pointed boots. That’s where the inspiration for my accessories came from. I tied an old vintage bandana around my neck to add a pop of color and the pointed toe black leather boots were a no-brainer. They helped round out my desert inspired look, giving me that outlaw vibe. Finally, I threw on my little leather backpack. I found this bag a few years back at a used clothing store and instantly fell in love with its western vibes. It was the perfect final touch to this ensemble.
