STYLE GURU STYLE: Denim Skirts Done Right

As August draws to a close and the weather cools down a bit, it’s time to start breaking out fall clothing. Personally, I love fall fashion—jackets, boots and scarves are my favorite—but just because it’s almost September doesn’t mean you have to put away all of your summer clothes just yet. Finding the right way to transition summer pieces to fall is an awesome way to expand your wardrobe and give yourself more options for looks.

So, as I was thinking back on some of my favorite fashion shows of this summer, I was trying to think of ways that I could take their summery looks and make them more appropriate for early fall. In my search, I came across Karen Walker’s resort 2016 collection. The show had lots of nautical elements, such as anchor prints, stripes and rope detailing along with plenty of oceanic blues and light wash denim. The denim in her collection was what truly stole the show for me; everything from frayed-out denim shirts and dresses to a full on denim jumpsuit made for some very chic looks. A few of her looks also featured some awesome denim skirts, which inspired me to try styling one myself.

I know that the denim skirt may seem like a blast from the past, but it’s a trend that’s slowly been making its way back in both street style and on the runway. When worn the right way, a denim skirt can feel very modern and stylish, and it’s also a great transition piece for summer to fall. For my outfit, I start with a cut-off denim skirt with a bit of a higher waistline. I tuck a plain black tank top into my skirt, and pair this with an army green button-up shirt. The earthy tone is great for fall and the longer sleeves give a bit of extra warmth for cooler days. The shirt’s loose fit also contrasts well with the slimmer skirt and gives the look a relaxed feel. I finish my outfit with a bit of a western vibe by adding a pair of black booties and some layered rings for accessories.

Although the thought of rocking a denim skirt may remind you of Britney Spears in the ‘90s, there are so many modern ways to wear it, you don’t have to worry about looking dated. Plus, with plenty of different styles, lengths and washes, you have lots of updated denim skirt options that you can pair with pieces from both your summer and fall wardrobes!
