STYLE GURU STYLE: Confidence is Key

As a girl, I know firsthand how hard it is to be confident all the time. One look at a Victoria’s Secret advertisement or that overachieving intern’s LinkedIn profile, and my confidence can take a nosedive for days—and sometimes even weeks. It’s often said that comparison is the thief of joy, and that piece of wisdom undoubtedly holds true when I’m too busy focusing on others to remember how awesome I am. But after almost 22 years of being a girl, I’ve learned one simple solution to the woes of self-doubt—a good outfit will always work wonders. This week’s boost of confidence came courtesy of the inspiration provided by the Camilla and Marc resort 2016 collection.

Filled to the brim with beautifully tailored pieces and out-of-this-world pantsuits, the Camilla and Marc collection was a testament to all the power dressers out there that need a little more flair in their wardrobe. Yet the show was not all office-wear and sharp edges; stunning lace, flowing ruffles and beautiful fabrics were weaved in throughout the collection, adding a surprising but welcomed softness to the overall aesthetic. While most outfits were a powerful black or white, a few soft colors were thrown in as if to hint that it’s okay to be as sweet as you are powerful. But perhaps the most striking detail of all was the silhouettes—form-fitting outfits, loose dresses, oversized sleeves and many an off-the-shoulder piece made for a diverse, statement-making show all the way through.

In true form, I recreated the Camilla and Marc collection in the simplest way possible. I chose a black pair of tailored pants, and paired it with a black off-the-shoulder top. After that, not much else was needed; a pair of black flats and a classic handbag finished off my  look, proving that it doesn’t have to be difficult to put together the ultimate power outfit.

As much as I wish every girl in the world was overflowing with self-confidence, we all know that that is not always the case. So when you’re feeling a little blue, don’t retreat to your sweats and wallow in self-pity. Instead, throw on your best power outfit—a strong color, a fabulous silhouette and a flip of the hair is really all you need. You’ll be back to running the world in no time at all.
