STYLE GURU STYLE: Colorful Embroidery

Summer is the perfect time to play with cool wearable fashion trends. It allows Fashionistas to have to experiment with fashion in new and ultimately unexpected ways. This summer my fashion staple was a peasant top. These tops featured a wide variety of intricate Mexican embroidery mixed with light breathable fabrics. Occasionally these tops are long sleeved and off the shoulder, or cap sleeved with heavy embroidery featured on the top portion of the shirt. These cool intricate Mexican embroidered patterns have been featured in shows like Rebecca Minkoff’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear show and Naeem Khan‘s resort 2015 show. Both designers took inspiration from Latin America and incorporated the traditional elements of Latin American culture into their designs. Minkoff and Khan took a fashionable and more wearable approach to traditional Latin America cultural fashion.

I opted to wear a more summer appropriate embroidered top. The colorful delicate detail of the embroidery stands out against the white breathable cotton. Although this peasant top can be dressed up or down, I chose to go for more of a casual approach. I paired my intricate top with some high-waisted shorts and a Stevie Nick’s inspired belt. The complicated cutouts in the details of the belt juxtaposed with the complex colorful embroidery featured on my top bring the entire outfit together. The simplicity of the shorts against the floral elements of both the belts and the shirt make this outfit seem effortless yet put together. The subtle Latin American inspiration—that is, the embroidery—does what a big statement necklace would do. It would grab your attention. Wearing this top, I felt bold, confident and most importantly, comfortable.
