STYLE GURU STYLE: Black Never Left

If a runway show could be my spirit animal, I’d find refuge in Alexander Wang’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Not only was this collection devoted to my favorite color of all time, he strategically styled the ensembles with a mix of hardware to break up the sea of black. Influences of grunge are apparent in his collection and offer an edge to an otherwise onyx color palette, a twist I fully support.

In my STYLE GURU BIO, I mentioned that I feel most at home in items that are black. Not trying to throw any shade to the color clad people of the world, but life is better in black. No matter the season or occasion, the absence of color is something I will don year-round. It is effortless, it radiates authority, and is the color of sophistication. Furthermore black is versatile; it is not only figure flattering but also flatters every skin tone. So all this chatter of another color replacing black? Negative. There will never be a new black.

Head to toe in black can give off a morbid feel but with creative pairings, you can endlessly layer items to create a harmonious look. Keep in mind the type of fabric worn should be season appropriate. For example, black wool isn’t practical in the summer, so opt for more lighter fabrics such as silk or linen. I wore a slinky high neck trapeze top with my closet-essential black rolled-up denim pants. For subtle statement, I chose to wear my absolute favorite NastyGal lucite heels. And to further add interest to my monochromatic outfit, I accessorized with silver jewelry that had stone accents, such as my hand chain and my amethyst gemstone necklace.

Get My Look: 1. A black high neck trapeze top. 2. Stylish lucite heels. 3. A gemstone necklace.
