STYLE GURU STYLE: Balmain Blues

Whether it’s a collaboration with H&M or any runway collection, Balmain never fails to make me fall in love with their pieces. They managed to do it again with their Balmain resort 2017 collection. In this collection, Balmain had a color theme of royal blue, olive green, orange tones and black. They incorporated, as they always do, very intricate patterns within their dresses and pants. The collection was filled with high-waisted skirts and pants incorporating thigh-high slits. They used thick statement belts to break up the top from the high-waisted pants or skirts. Overall, the collection had an elegant feel with a perfect mix of colors, patterns and fabrics.

Royal blue is, and has been, an underrated color. It is, in my opinion, a vibrant, yet elegant color that will look good on most skin tones. After looking through the Balmain collection, I instantly went to search for any royal blue pieces I had in my closet. I ran into this royal blue dress from my 18th birthday. Needless to say, it is now more a shirt than a dress as I’m not the same size I was in high school. Regardless, the shoulder details are stunning and I thought they would be perfect for the elegance and edginess that Balmain brings to its collection.

The leg slit was, by far, my favorite theme of the collection. I reach a high 5’2″, so when I can take advantage of making my legs look longer than they are, you better believe I’m taking it. The high leg slits do just that, which is why chose a skirt with two slits on each side. To continue with the “looking taller than I really am” theme, I took inspiration from the collection’s strappy heels.

Lastly, although the collection incorporated statement belts, I’m not a thick belt kind of gal. I did, though, want to include a belt. I chose a thin black belt that kept harmony with the outfit. More importantly, it kept the focus on the shoulder pads and the skirt.
