STYLE GURU STYLE: Back To Black

I have always been a lover of black clothing. It creates a sort of confidence that I can’t get from other colors and, not to mention, it is extremely slimming. There is something about slipping on my favorite pair of black, ripped jeans and a leather jacket for a night out. An all black look creates the perfect balance of class and edge.

Watching many runway shows during New York Fashion Week, I noticed that black is turning out to be a very popular color for 2015. From casual to evening wear, black seemed to be incorporated everywhere. Vera Wang pulled off the all black look oh so well in her fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Her looks include feminine pieces with oversized, boxy layers paired with heavy black boots. The tailored look with a casual feel stuck out to me as the season’s boldest trend. I put my own spin on it as a college student, proving anyone can pull off this look.

My favorite way to remedy the end of the semester blues is expressing myself through an outfit. I feel a sense of calm knowing there is at least one thing I can control while it seems like the rest of my life is hazy. Also, looking nice always helps me test better. As clichéd as it sounds, the term “dress for success” really does ring true. I chose to take a simple black dress and pair it with an oversized half jacket and short black boots, creating an effortless classy look. You also get a nice layered look from the bottom of the dress and where the jacket hits the waist. The boxy sleeves are what complete my transition from Vera Wang runway to everyday street style.

I noticed that Vera Wang kept it simple and didn’t add any jewelry that would distract from the clothing. I followed suit with understated silver earrings that matched the buttons of my jacket. Now, let’s talk about the boots. These boots have become a staple in my winter wardrobe and are currently my favorite pair of shoes! Their height adds sophistication to any outfit while the chunky heel and platform keep it interesting.

It is simple to take what you see on the runway and turn it into your own style. Sometimes something as simple as monochromatic colors can take an outfit to a whole new level. Don’t ever be afraid to try something new! And remember, the designers may know how to turn heads, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do the same!
