STYLE GURU STYLE: An Outfit Fit For a (Scream) Queen

It all started with Sex and the City, and Gossip Girl soon followed. Every night I would turn on my TV and stuff my face with popcorn as I combatted a major case of closet envy. Like every other aspiring Fashionista, I wanted to steal the iconic, standout styles of Carrie and Blair.

When Ryan Murphy’s highly antipicated show Scream Queens aired, I was instantly hooked. What’s not to love about a TV show that’s the perfect combination of American Horror Story and Glee? However, I wasn’t expecting to gain a new style icon from this comedy meets horror whodunnit, so imagine my excitement when each episode felt like I was sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week. Emma Roberts slays (figuratively and quite literally) as Chanel Oberlin, Queen B and leader of a pack of stylish minions called “The Chanels.” While the clique may constantly spit out nasty insults that even Blair Waldorf would be shocked by, they sure look fabulous doing it.

Emmy-nominated Scream Queens costume designer Lou Eyrich told Vogue, “Ryan (Murphy), in the very beginning that he “wanted the girls to look like candy, so I started researching candy and I came up with this gorgeous picture of macarons, and it was all these gorgeous pastel colors, so that was my inspiration for the palette.” Taking cue from both classic and recent fashion trends, Chanel Oberlin and her posse are regularly dressed in feathers, fur, sequins and pearls in every pastel color imaginable.

It can’t be any coincidence that Chanel refers to Karl Lagerfeld as her god father in the show. The Chanel’s constantly look like they just walked off the runway—Chanel’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear show to be exact. Preppy herringbone jackets and cashmere sweaters adorned with crystals and bows were seen on the airport terminal inspired runway. Much like the style seen on Scream Queens, the looks were chic yet sassy.

Although I’m on a college budget and can’t afford the extravagant outfits worn by the Chanels, I channeled my inner scream queen by pairing a pastel blue jacket with a preppy black blouse and fun polka-dot skirt. I finished my look with a sparkling statement necklace and playful chunky heels. While I wouldn’t wear this look to class like the characters unrealistically do, it’s a perfect date night or GNO outfit. The only things missing are a designer handbag and a pumpkin spice latte–but of course I wouldn’t call my barista a psychopath for making it at the wrong temperature…

Get My Look: 1. Pastel jacket. 2. Polka-dot skirt. 3. Statement necklace.
