STYLE GURU STYLE: A Complete Mesh

Mesh details and grid cutouts caught my eye as I scrolled through Versace’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Grid cutout pieces were layered over smaller monochrome tops and bottoms, causing both skin and fabric to peek through the cutout squares. The resulting look was sexy and sleek. Black mesh long sleeve tops were layered over black crop tops or under long black vests, creating sporty and edgy looks. By simply adding layers of mesh, Versace revitalized otherwise plain ensembles.

The focal point of my look inspired by Versace’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection is a Miss Finch black midi skirt with a mesh overlay. While my skirt doesn’t show as much skin as the Versace pieces, it has the same edgy vibe. I paired the skirt with a Fly Art graphic T-shirt featuring a painting by French Impressionist Edgar Degas and lyrics by pop princess Fergie. I’ve always been a fan of Fly Art’s T-shirts and crewneck sweaters, which match famous paintings with hip hop lyrics. Bringing out the gold tones in the T-shirt, I added a minimalist, gold spiked necklace by Milwaukee jewelry label Bird’s Tail Designs. Oversized black sunglasses offer a chic touch, mimicking the ladylike length of the skirt. Finally, I completed my outfit with simple black and brown sandals from Forever 21 that feature a thick ankle strap. While my outfit has some more formal pieces, like the midi skirt and gold necklace, the sandals and the graphic T-shirt make it a casual, slightly edgy look that’s perfect for the weekend.

What I love about the mesh trend is that it can be adapted to fit many different occasions. Since my mesh skirt is longer, I could wear it to my internship if I paired it with a white button-down top and heels. I could also make my look streetwear ready by taking off the necklace and sporting a pair of white or black sneakers. With a trend that’s so versatile, there’s no reason not to try out a mesh look yourself.
