STYLE GURU STYLE: ’70s Retro

The ’70s retro and sporty-chic trends have graced the runways this year, stimulating plenty of high-energy collections with bold, multicolored prints and mod cuts. Specifically, I was inspired by the sporty silhouettes and vibrant patterns of the DKNY spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection along with some of the retro floral elements from the Giambattista Valli resort 2016 collection.

When it came down to creating a look inspired by these two collections, I came up with something that is both edgy and girly at the same time, which I think encompasses both the retro and sporty trends. The pattern of my dress screams ’70s retro to me, especially with its bold floral and striped pattern that is colorful and vibrant yet still very wearable. The Giambattista Valli collection includes many of these kinds of shift dresses with short hemlines in lots of different floral patterns. In addition, the neckline of my dress and the mesh sleeves are reminiscent of the sporty fabrications in the DKNY collection.

Since my dress is a statement piece on its own, I decided to keep it simple with the shoes and the jacket. A classic leather jacket really edges up the outfit, making it perfect for a night on the town. The shoes I chose are inspired by the various platform shoes that were used in the DKNY collection, and I thought they added another fierce element to the look. The juxtaposition of the leather and floral makes for an outfit that is equal parts girly and rocker chick, which is something that every girl aspires to be.

Get My Look: 1. A floral print shift dress. 2. Leather jacket. 3. Black platform booties.
