Hello Fashionista/os! I’m Yasmin, and I am a second year at the University of Virginia studying Anthropology and Computer Science. This will be my first semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and I am so excited for what this opportunity has in store! Photography has been something I have always been interested in, but have never had the time to dive into. I am looking forward to this as a way to get my hands wet in the hobby.
Growing up, I never had the chance to wear what I wanted everyday. For as long as I could remember, I was forced to wear unappealing uniforms to school. From a strict dress code through my elementary and middle school years to knee-high socks, saddle shoes and uncomfortable jumpers during my Catholic high school days. Now that I am in college, I finally have the chance to express myself as an individual.
Before I started college, I used to think I had a semi-preppy style, but I was blown out of the water once I started my first year at UVA. It became my goal to stand out. Although UVA does have diversity in some aspects, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of oversized Greek T-shirts, Nike shorts and Patagonia quarter zips. The UVA student body tends to be harmonious, and I wanted to make my own statement. Over the past year, I started paying more attention to street style trends, following fashion bloggers on Tumblr and YouTube as well as emulating celebrities such as Kendall and Kylie Jenner. I would constantly search “college outfit of the weeks” on YouTube and Google “college wardrobe essentials” to get even more inspiration, and, one day, I ended up on CollegeFashionista. The reason why I love this site is because it shows real college students rocking outfits they feel comfortable in on normal college campuses nationwide. It’s more realistic than looking at Vogue or other fashion blogs.
Along with fashion, some of my interests include drawing, music, playing guitar and exploring the outdoors. I hope I can give you the inspiration that many on the site have given me! Check back every Thursday for a look through my lens!
