STYLE GURU BIO: Victoria Pickens

As I finished up the fall 2014 semester, I was thrilled to know that I had just one more to complete before I graduate from Philadelphia University. I was driving home from my last final, listening to my celebratory Beyoncé playlist, only to be hit with the realization that I would be graduating from my internship with CollegeFashionista in May 2015 as well. Although this put me into a rare emotional state, and I may have actually shed some tears, it made me extremely appreciative of all that I have gained from being a Style Guru for over a year.

My name is Victoria and I am a senior majoring in fashion merchandising and management. Throughout my college experience as a fashion student, I have become aware of how essential participating in activities outside of the classroom is to my future career. Extracurriculars were a way for me to discover the real career path I wanted to follow, which I feel has lead me more toward journalism than merchandising. My internship with CollegeFashionista, my position as the web editor of PhilaU’s student run fashion magazine and various other freelance and personal projects have all made me fall in love with creative writing and publishing—a love that has been feeding my dreams and causing them to grow bigger every day.

Everything I do, and the way I do it, is a reflection of my personal style as an individual. The thing I value most about life is my ability to express myself and create my own identity through style. The way I write, laugh, love, think and dress is all, metaphorically, mixed into a pot to make me who I am (if you just envisioned Professor Utonium creating the Powerpuff Girls, then we’re on the same page). I may have been self-conscious of it when I was younger, but now I never mind being considered “weird” or different. I prefer to spend my weekends blogging and reading, I know every word to every Gossip Girl episode, I believe in the law of attraction and I live in oversized sweaters, destroyed jeans, boots and gold chains. I tweet a lot, I listen to music all day and night, I follow my own rules, I eat an abnormal amount of popcorn and I think that Oprah Winfrey is the coolest person ever. I love being me and I love my style just as much as I love appreciating other people for having their own. All of which, naturally, makes me a Style Guru.

Although today marks the beginning of the last semester of my college career and internship, the love I have for all things CollegeFashionista will never end. I am proud to be able to say that I am a Style Guru, a title that I will hold onto forever.
