STYLE GURU BIO: Sydney Sweeney

It’s safe to say that my first semesters of college have ended just as quickly as last year’s sneaker wedge trend, but before the fashion critic inside of me gets laced up in things, it’d probably be a good idea to introduce myself. I’m Sydney, a Journalism and Public Relations second year at San Diego State University, where the warm weather and attractive student body make for a heavenly campus experience. This summer is my first semester writing for CollegeFashionista, but that doesn’t exactly mean I’m unfamiliar with channeling the Style Guru within. If you don’t believe me, just ask my friends—I’m incessantly offering them loads of unsolicited style advice (I even influenced my male RA to hop on the jean jacket train).

My love affair with fashion blossomed at a young age, and I think that the teenage, trendsetting title character of That’s So Raven had something to do with it. As I sat in front of my television lusting after every brightly-colored, fur-covered clothing item in the protagonist’s closet, I decided that I, too, wanted to be a fashion designer. My honest mother instantaneously destroyed my dream when she revealed that I’d have to take up the art of sewing in order to actually pursue that career path; as a nine-year-old girl, I had more interest in wearing the threads than actually making them.

Regardless, I still appreciated those who were innovative enough to design, and as I grew older, I discovered my adoration for another art form—writing. Still very invested in the material romance I have with clothing, I’m beyond ecstatic to work with a such an awesome platform like CollegeFashionista, where creative expression is promoted through both fashion and writing.

Of course, as a Style Guru, it’s important for me to feel “at one” with my inner Fashionista, even if she tends to make some seemingly unreasonable decisions (like buying another black sweater, because it’s impossible to own too many). A freakishly large percent of my closet consists of black clothing, and don’t tell any of my leather jackets this, but I’m emotionally attached to every article of denim outerwear I own. My latest obsession has been a pair of suede loafers from Forever 21, but for the most part, I can be found hiding at Goodwill—my biggest enemy is the fitting room’s six item limit. I draw inspiration from Tumblr when I get dressed in the morning, although I do have a soft spot for people-watching; nothing is more inspiring that the ingenious ensembles brought to the table by everyday Fashionista and Fashionistos.

So, as the summer commences, I can definitely say that I’m looking forward to sharing some of my own style advice while gaining a little knowledge from other Style Gurus, as well. In fact, does anyone around here know how to make my favorite black skinny jeans even a tad more appropriate for this California heat?
