STYLE GURU BIO: Sydney Sturm

January 8th, 2016 at 2:00am

Hi there Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Sydney, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, studying marketing and retail merchandising. This will be my third semester as a Style Guru, and I’m still so excited to continue sharing fashion trends, tips and advice with all of you. Fashion is always changing and keeping me on my toes, and I love being able to use CollegeFashionista as a way to continue to learn more about it.

I’m not quite sure just when my love for fashion began, but I do remember dressing up and putting on countless fashion shows for my parents as I grew up. When my sisters came along, I had two little live dolls that I could dress up in even more fun clothes. From there I moved on to dance recitals, where I got to put on sparkly outfits and wear bright makeup. I remember begging my mom to buy me Seventeen magazine every time we went to the store, wanting to flip through the pretty, glossy pages to see all the clothes and beauty products. Not having any older sisters to look up to, I had to figure out lots of things on my own—everything from putting outfits together to applying eyeliner and blush.

Over the years I’ve definitely made some cringe-worthy clothing choices (like that bright pink eyeshadow I wore in the eighth grade or those huge neon earrings that I loved so much), but I think I’ve come a long way since then. I know what looks good on me and what doesn’t, what I like and what I’d never be caught dead wearing. My current essentials include: a good pair of distressed jeans, soft flannel shirts, and a black leather jacket that can be thrown over almost everything. I’m also a big fan of wearing oversized items, and I always try to mix textures in my looks.

While I’ve definitely grown a lot and come to know what my own personal style is, I’m still searching for ways to mix things up and new trends to try. That’s what I enjoy most about being a Style Guru—the opportunity to meet fashionable people like you and be inspired by what you’re wearing. Like I said, fashion is always changing and I’m always looking to learn more. I hope you’re ready for another awesome semester, I can’t wait to see what all of the fashionable people here in Minnesota will be wearing!
