STYLE GURU BIO! – Nia McLeod

Hello my lovely fashionable family! My name is Nia McLeod, and I’m a officially a Style Guru for Virginia Commonwealth University. I’m majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a fun new minor in English. I’m super excited to be given this opportunity to showcase how incredibly fashionable my school is. I always see the most unique and eye-catching outfits whenever I step on VCU’s campus. This will be the perfect place to give some of my favorite outfits the spotlight.

I was born in Atlanta, Georgia but I’ve been living in Richmond since the third grade. So I pretty much know Richmond like the back of my hand. But ever since I’ve came to VCU two years ago, I’ve fallen in love with Downtown Richmond. There’s so much to be inspired by. There’s beautiful murals and graffiti that take over the brick walls and give the city a new life; a breath of fresh air.

There’s always different events to keep your interest and there is something for everyone. No matter what your interests are there is bound to be something that strikes your fancy in Richmond.

Fashion is a newfound love for me. The sudden boom of fashion bloggers on YouTube peaked my interest when I was a sophomore in high school. I became truly inspired by them and then began emulating them. I started to think more about the outfits that I put together and how I presented myself each and every day. And, of course, it became super duper fun to see what outfits I could come up with next.

I became a huge thrifter after that because the only thing I love more than a dope outfit is a dope outfit for a bargain. I also like the treasure hunter aspect of it; it makes my heart flutter when I find a cute new piece at the thrifts.

The outfit I have on shows one of the newest editions to my wardrobe: OVERALLS! I never thought I would be the one to try to pull them off, but they’re cuter than I ever could imagine. They give me a sort of ’90s revival Aaliyah type vibe, and I’m always the one to go for that as much as possible since the ’90s is my favorite decade. I got these specific ones from Target.

I’m also trying out mixing metals. Most of the time people worry about matching their outfits to the T, but sometimes it could come out even cooler to mix it up a little bit. I contrasted the dark silver color of my buckles and buttons with the gold in my earrings and my bracelets.

These overalls are, of course, a great dressing down piece, but they also could be dressed up with a nice blouse and heels. The sky’s the limit with these babies, and I can’t wait to see what other outfits I can come up with including them.

I’m excited to utilize this opportunity to see all the dope style that VCU’s student body has to offer!
