STYLE GURU BIO: Miranda Coker

Hello there! My name is Miranda Coker and this is my first semester as a CollegeFashionista Style Guru. I am currently a Junior at Roger Williams University where I plan to major in Journalism with a Minor in Political Science and a Core Concentration in Theater. I love dogs (specifically Pembroke Welsh Corgis), anything Disney, coffee of all kinds, bold lipstick and puns. I plan to bring a Bicoastal perspective when it comes to college fashion.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. After graduating high school, I decided I wanted a completely new experience. I decided to attend college on the east coast, small town Rhode Island to be specific. The fashion culture of these two areas could not be more different. In Los Angeles, it’s all about making a statement, whether it’s with chunky boots or a flowing kimono. L.A. style is all about being an individual and a trendsetter. In scenic Bristol, Rhode Island, like many smaller New England towns, it’s very preppy and classic. You’re much more likely to spot someone in a pair of Sperry Top-Siders than a pair of Dr. Martens. I, however, rock both.

Since moving to New England, my style has definitely become a mix of both coastal styles. I still stick with my west coast staples of black boots, neutral colors, and interesting silhouettes, but now I incorporate pops of color and large statement jewelry, which is not something I did before. Being on both coasts has allowed my fashion taste to expand almost as far as the distance between the two states I call home.

I felt like this outfit was a true representation of my personal style. A style that I came to really enjoy recently was crop tops paired with something high-waisted, like this pencil skirt. I also like combining casual and dressy elements in outfits to add a nice contrast. I added a denim vest to this ensemble to give it a nice edge and I really think it adds a whole new level to the outfit. I finished off the look with gold accessories, a bold necklace, a red lip, and chunky, patent leather booties.

I couldn’t be more thrilled to be starting this adventure with CollegeFashionista this summer. I can remember being in elementary school sketching clothes and talking with my friends about the perfect outfits to wear for red carpets. I have always loved fashion and now I am fortunate to be able to share my love of fashion with everyone in the CollegeFashionista community.  To quote one of my favorite Disney princesses Rapunzel, “Venture outside your comfort zone. The rewards are worth it.”  Now it’s time for me to venture outside my comfort zone and see what kind of rewards await me at the end of this experience. Now, let’s get this show on the road!
