STYLE GURU BIO: Mikayla Todish

I’m a 20-year-old theatre production student at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario whose main influence comes straight from the big screen. Films have been the main source of style tips since my childhood; movies were my first love. The actors, costumes, set locations, etc. inspire me endlessly, and I hope to work with films in the future. Other style influences of mine include Solange Knowles, Lady Gaga, Cher, Alexa Chung, Rihanna and many many more.

I am attracted to styles and designs that are made up of the art, literature and music from the past. I am interested in the individual’s effort to take something old and transform it into something new and refreshing. This creates a feeling of nostalgia within the outfit, which evokes emotions that belong to that single person. I believe fashion is an inimitable experience.

In the last couple years, I have been obsessed with the medium of magazines and zines. I love reading about the experiences of young talented women and having that experience coupled with images and designs that challenge ideals and have a lot of glitter!

Growing up in a small town, it can define you or push you to create a bigger world for yourself than the one presented to you. I hope to design and travel after I graduate in four years and never stop. I believe travel is essential in designing and living a happy life. Having perspective that derives from tangible people and places has always helped me artistically.

When I’m avoiding my schoolwork you can find me blogging and listening to the new pop releases, with a special interest in bubble gum pop boy bands (almost always One Direction). I also enjoy painting (not One Direction, I promise), photography, cuddling with my three cats and shopping at the nearest second hand stores.
