STYLE GURU BIO: Maya Porter

Welcome, my fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Maya Porter and I am a new Style Guru reporting on the trends I spot at the University of Kansas this summer. This falll, I will be a senior majoring in Strategic Communications with a minor in Film and Media Studies. In the future, I hope to work as a publicist in the media industry. My career goals originated from my fascination with Hollywood and films as a little girl. A few of my favorite movies like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Clueless, are a perfect mixture of two passions in my life: film and fashion.

Although I considered the stars of those films to be my style icons, I didn’t have a drop of fashion sense growing up. I mostly sported what was considered “cool” and “on-trend” at the time. Let’s just say my closet was filled with denim skirts in my junior high years. Once I hit high school, I began to find myself a bit and was opened to the world of fashion. Since then, my style has evolved. I’m never a one style kind of girl. My go-to looks vary from floral sun-dresses to black leather skinny jeans, it always depends on the mood.

The outfit I’m wearing in my STYLE GURU BIO is something you would see me in on any random day. I would wear this to class, out to lunch or to see a movie; it’s a universally casual outfit. My closet consists of mostly monotone shades so this dress fits right in. I love clothing that you can feel comfortable in and with this being lightweight cotton and sleeveless, this dress does just that. I like to stick to my roots and since I’ve been rocking Converse since practically my first day on this earth thanks to my mom, I thought I’d add in my favorite gray pair. Pieces like my tinted aviators and my little brown backpack are accessories I feel like I can’t go without; they add that finishing touch to the outfit.

I can’t wait to share with you the fashion world from my fellow Jayhawks. To stay updated, keep an eye out for my posts every Wednesday here at CollegeFashionista.
