Hello Fashionistas! My name is Madison, and I am majoring in advertising and minoring in photography at the College for Creative Studies here in Detroit, Michigan.

Detroit is a place where art and design are growing immensely, and the urban beauty of it lives on the personalized graffiti walls or the abandoned buildings and architecture all around me, so it’s easy to express yourself with fashion and become your own walking work of art.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that I was willing to be bold with my clothing and makeup choices. I also realized I was dressing the same as everyone around me, wearing things like name brand T-shirts. Where’s the fun in that? Most of my newfound aesthetic stems from my love for high fashion and its branding and photography. The boldness of companies such as Chanel and Marc Jacobs have inspired not only my photography. but also my choices in how I dress, especially when it comes to edgy and unique looks.

Mixing bold colors and neutrals is a must in my mind and from what I have learned (and loved) from color theory. If you were to look in my closet, you would see mostly black and gray sweaters and T-shirts, but if you looked in my makeup and accessories, you would see neon blue and purple tights, bright red lipstick and yellow eyeliner. The combination of neutral shades with the small eye-catching hues (along with my blue ombré hair) creates a statement outfit that I know I crafted and will love to walk around in all day.

When it comes to fashion and shopping, I am a firm believer in owning a lot of clothes for a small price in order to mix and match pieces and create an infinite number of outfits. Places like Forever 21 and H&M have become my personal favorites because of their affordable prices and super cute and versatile pieces such as the backpack and fur vest above.

If you were to ask me where to start on building your own personal look, my best advice is to find pieces you know you can use all the time such as a black leather jacket, combat boots and a fitting pair of jeans. Then, start experimenting! Pick up that patterned scarf you had your eye on, and try to wear it as many ways as possible, or rock that bright blue eyeliner with a monochromatic outfit scheme. We have all heard the saying “it never hurts to try,” and you’ll never know what you like to wear until you try it out!

I can’t wait to share more with you and have an exciting (and colorful) season with CollegeFashionista and the Style Gurus!
