STYLE GURU BIO: Leah Poponick

I’ve always had a relatively simple sense of style—nothing too fancy, nothing too casual. When I was a senior in high school and into my freshman year of college, I began refining who I am in terms of style. I realized pretty quickly that I love wearing many different fashion trends. I love high-wasted pants and tea-length dresses from the ’50s, high-top Converse from the ’80s and ’90s, and crazy leggings made popular with today’s fashion trends. For me, anything goes. Sometimes I match colors, sometimes I match patterns. Sometimes I’m grunge, sometimes I’m sophisticated. I think that’s the fun part about our clothing. We have freedom to express ourselves however we please.

In this article, I’m wearing a fringed charcoal gray poncho with black and white patterned leggings, a black and white plaid scarf, white high-top Converse shoes, and I topped off the look with a black bowler hat.

I am in love with this poncho. The solid, neutral color gives it the possibility to be worn with multiple colors and outfits. Also, it is something that can be worn with jeans to make it more casual. The fringe makes me feel like Pocahontas and the flowy, oversized nature will make anyone feel comfortable. In fact, the oversized look is one of my favorite trends right now. I’m taller than your average girl and most of my height results from my legs so I love the way oversized tops balance my height.

Leggings, yet another trend that is blowing up today. With the consultant-based brand LuLaRoe, everyone is feeling the fun in crazy patterned leggings. Personally, I pay 75 percent of my attention to comfort, but I make sure not to sacrifice style for comfort. These leggings are 100 percent comfortable. I love the way the pattern provides interest, but is not overpowering or distracting.

Now the bowler is the style of hat that seems to pop up in many different eras of fashion; history repeats itself. In today’s fashion, you can wear this hat with a grunge style or a more dressed up preppy style. For me, I love the way it complements the fringe of the poncho and the way it contrasts with my light hair.

Like I said, I love all types of styles. I like to call this one “sophisticated grunge,” but make no mistake, I’ll be on the lookout for Fashionistas or Fashionistos rocking looks that are preppy, athletic, casual, bohemian, and more!
