STYLE GURU BIO: Kayla Cooke

Hey everyone! My name is Kayla, and I’m so excited to be back for my second semester with CollegeFashionista! I just finished up my junior year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I’m studying Communication Arts and Web Development with a certificate in Digital Studies. In addition to my passion for styling, I’m a self-taught web developer and designer—so I’m also a major tech and coding geek! After graduation I plan to move out west to Los Angeles with the hopes of working at a major fashion magazine or lifestyle PR firm. I’m an avid blogger, photographer, designer, writer and table-top dancer.

I typically consider myself pretty open-minded in the world of fashion and my personal tastes are always evolving. Right now I’m obsessed with anything and everything reminiscent of vintage ’50s or ’60s. I love retro silhouettes along with playful combinations of feminine details and pinup girl vibes. (If you’re confused, just know that Lana Del Rey is my go-to fashion inspiration goddess).

This includes cropped blouses, short skater skirts—chambray is a must this season—leather jackets, polka-dot bustiers and my signature winged eyeliner. In general, I love any kind of juxtaposition. Vintage lingerie dresses with leather vests, a flirty skirt with a sporty crop top (pictured above) and so on. The juxtaposition always creates the unexpected, and that’s what I think creates the most unique and eye-catching outfits.

I currently also work as a brand ambassador and editorial contributor for WhatRUWearing, a creative team member for MODA Magazine and as the PR director of my sorority, Alpha Phi. I tend to have a lot on my plate at all times, but I love every minute! I’m an old soul, and I like to think that I live and breathe everything creative. Feel free to reach out to me on social media! I’d love to meet you.
