Hello, friends, students and observers. My name is Katie Binetti, I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in York, Pennsylvania. I moved to Pittsburgh three years ago and was accepted into the University of Pittsburgh, where I began my dual degree in Communications and Business. Through many changes, relocations and different majors, one thing has stayed the same and that was my love for fashion.

In 8th grade, I was introduced to sewing through a family and consumer science class, where I made my first purse. I took four years of clothing classes where I made my 9th grade homecoming dress, senior prom dress and several of my baby sister’s holiday dresses. For my senior project, I coordinated a charity fashion show for Cystic Fibrosis with other students. While each student had their particular task to make the show run smoothly, myself and three other students reconstructed and designed donated apparel.

As high school came to an end, my career choices started to become more realistic. My mother thought it would be better for me to stay at home and attend community college for nursing. After two years and serious contemplations of my future, I decided to drop out of nursing school and move to Pittsburgh. From there, I attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania for Fashion Merchandising (IUP). I then had a great idea to move to San Diego and apply to Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). I was accepted into the Visual Communications program at FIDM but had to quickly decline and move back to the East Coast. Wanting to be by my families side, I made a final decision to apply to the University of Pittsburgh for Communications and Business. Not sure of where this degree would take me in the fashion world, I work tremendously hard in extra circular activities related to fashion to build a credible resume.

Fashion is not just a materialistic and superficial career. It is about expressing yourself through the items you purchase and style you create. It is not just about looking good, either. It is about the ingenious creativity and talent that goes into making couture lines and their elaborate runway shows. It is about the dedication and teamwork each company has in order to pull off Fashion Week every year! I am inspired by each and every designer and their hard work.

I love being different and trying new trends that come out like crop tops, kimono jackets, body chains and much more. My all-time favorite style is to accessorize. I love to drape a big chunky necklace over a white tank top that is tucked into high waist jeans and finish my outfit with vibrant heels. The mix and match opportunities are endless when you keep your outfit simple but add fun accessories.

As a Communication major, writing is my life and I am truly grateful and excited to be able to write about my passion for CollegeFashionista.
