STYLE GURU BIO: Julia O'Brien

Hey Fashionistas/os! My name is Julia O’Brien, and I am going to be a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am studying communications, and I find that people communicate with others through what they wear. I often find myself matching my outfits to my mood, and I also find that my style reflects my personality!

I am largely inspired by fashions of the past, borrowing primarily from the styles of the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’90s. This is why I just love to go to secondhand stores and thrift shops! I really like incorporating vintage looks and pieces into modern clothing styles. Take for example my vintage, red, leather purse (circa ’70s) that really adds a pop of color and contrasts with my yellow jacket! I love pops of color in my wardrobe because I think it really makes a person stand out in a crowd. Although, to not overdo the loud colors, I have added more subtle tones of black, tan and light pink. Also, I just love these tan wedges, and the subtle detail of the lace cut-outs are gorgeous!

Originally from the Bay Area and right outside of San Francisco, California, I am also constantly inspired by the professional street look. In San Francisco, young professionals want to look sophisticated but also unique to stand out from the masses that crowd San Francisco’s streets. I have incorporated this sense of hip-professionalism into my own wardrobe. I think this look is especially illustrated with my round-rimmed tortoise shell and green glasses as well as with my light pink button-down skirt. Both round-rimmed glasses and pencil skirts are clothes that a professional might wear, but I balance that professionalism with my own unique style by picking a pencil skirt that is pink and buttoned down in the front and picking glasses that are a fun pattern and color. My goal is to look professional but also to look like I’m having fun!

I look forward to writing more articles and getting inspired by the many college Fashionistas/os out there on the streets!
