STYLE GURU BIO: Jessica Boertje

Hello to all the Fashionistas/os! My name is Jessica Boertje and I am, as of one week ago, a graduate from Central College. My degree is in communication studies, and now that I have four years done (whew!), I’ll be focusing in on the cross-cultural side of communications at Newcastle University in Newcastle, England. Until September, though, I’ll be in Iowa working on my final internship of my undergrad as a Style Guru!

I can’t say that from a young age I loved fashion. In fact, until I was about 14 years old, I didn’t pay attention to what everyone else was wearing and what was “popular.” Since I was in fifth grade, though, I would say that I had style. Even though my style wasn’t what it is now, it was the beginning of a transformation of who I wanted to become. As I became increasingly more interested in my image, I began observing fashion trends and copying them. As I continued to grow, especially once I started college, I began to really understand the importance of creating my own style.

The idea behind style is incredible: To show your personality to others without having to speak a single word. To express yourself without opening your mouth is an incredible (and addicting!) task that I enjoy doing every day. Once you understand different styles, its hard not to notice what everyone else is wearing to express themselves. Not only do you get a snapshot into their personality by observing their style, but you get a little inspiration for outfits of your own!

During my time as a Style Guru, I’m excited to see what new styles unfold in the Fashionistas/os that I’ll photograph and write about. Hopefully, by reading my articles and those of other Style Gurus, you’ll get a little style-inspiration too.
