STYLE GURU BIO: Ijeoma Iheme

Hey ya’ll! My name is Ijeoma and I am a senior at Texas Tech University majoring in Retail Management and double minoring in Public Relations and General Business. This is my first semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and I am so excited to immerse myself into this amazing opportunity!

When I was nine, my older cousin, who was a free-lance make up artist in Nigeria at the time, taught me about makeup. I became instantly obsessed.  My mom would go to this one store and next to it was a dollar store. Whenever I had a chance, I would sneak next door to that dollar store and buy cheap makeup. The next year my mom took me into a Hancock Fabrics to sign up for a sewing class. At the time, I did not have interest in learning how to sew but the moment I walked into that store and saw all of the different types of fabrics that could turn into clothes, I became aware of where I belonged.

My love for fashion only grew from there. I started subscribing to magazines; I would save certain clippings, and later on, I made a wall mural of them. In high school, my subject concentrations and organizations were more fashion-related. I didn’t think much about making a career out of it because my parents had always insisted on me going into the health field. So for the first three years of college I was a Bio-Chemistry Major, and the plan was to go to Pharmacy School, but, at the same time, I would design and create clothes for fashion shows and have been asked to be a stylist/makeup artist for several events. Long story short, I realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do, so I changed majors. I have never been happier. This summer I got the opportunity to intern with Nordstrom in Boston; honestly one of the top five best experiences of my life.

As for this upcoming spring semester, I cannot wait to document the little bit of fashion we do have on campus! Texas Tech is filled with oversized sorority T-shirts, black tights and Nike Free Runs. I plan to scope out those few individuals who wake up at 6 a.m. for their 8 a.m. class to get ready, versus those who roll out of bed 10 minutes before class! Who knows, hopefully this semester, this internship will pull me out of the fashion-less whirlwind of laziness and into something more vibrant and creative.

By the way, here is a fun fact about me. My to go accessories on a regular basis include three things: oversized sunglasses, a purse and lipstick!

I love that CollegeFashionista is giving me a platform to dive in into the fashion realm. Look for my posts every Wednesday this semester!
