STYLE GURU BIO: Courtney Costello

Hey, Fashionistas/os! I’m Courtney Costello, a freshman Business major at the University of Florida. Since I was a little girl my dream jobs have ranged from fashion designer to world-class chef to makeup artist to party planner and to editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine. I have always been a HUGE girly girl with a lot of dreams and a love for all things pink and sparkly. Like most young girls, my favorite thing to do was dress up in the most princesslike dresses and my mom’s high heels. Fast forward about 19 years later and I would like to believe that my fashion sense has matured and evolved nicely in addition to fitting into a specific category, but that’s still not the case.

My style ranges from chic to contemporary to girly to even I-just-rolled-out-of-bed. All Fashionistas expect to preserve their “best-dressed” title throughout their college years, but 8:00 a.m. classes really have a way of taking the Fashionista right out of you. But, I’m a firm believer that your personal style is a part of who you are that grows and changes with you. It doesn’t matter that yesterday you enjoyed wearing sneakers and jeans, if today you woke up and feel like wearing wedges and a sundress, then do it! Style is all about exposing yourself and who you are to the world, and the best part is that only you can decide that.

It is summer in Florida, which means it’s almost unbearable to wear anything but a tank top and shorts on your long walks to class. I really believe summer is the most challenging season to portray your style. I don’t want to make myself uncomfortable so I stick to the tank top and shorts, but add a little bit of my own style to that. My favorite piece to do this with are bralettes. I love how they are so simple, but can add so much to an outfit. I got mine from Forever 21 for only five dollars. I love how the straps peek out on both sides and with the strappy detailing showing in the back. Another favorite trick of mine is to put all your awesome flannels from the fall to good use. Tying a flannel around your waist is perfect because it doesn’t make you uncomfortably hot, but adds to a simple outfit and also goes extremely well with a pair of Converse. Converse are essential for campus life in the summer because walking long distances in cute, but extremely uncomfortable sandals is not fun. Beauty doesn’t always have to be painful.

Fashion with the idea that everybody has their own individual style has always been something I’m passionate about. I love to see a stranger in an outfit that she/he displays with ultimate confidence. I am so excited to start seeking out all of the Fashionistas/os on my campus and showing you all what I find unique about their personal style.
