STYLE GURU BIO: Angela Kirkpatrick

Miuccia Prada once said, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today when human contacts go so fast. Fashion is instant language.” For me, fashion has always been about making a statement about myself, and I have always had a passion for it.

I am new to the CollegeFashionista world, and this will be my first semester as a Style Guru. My name is Angela Kirkpatrick, and I am a senior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville majoring in Journalism and Electronic Media. There are thousands of students who walk UT’s campus every day, and it is definitely a place where people are encouraged to express their style. I am so excited to start my journey viewing fashion through a Style Guru’s camera lens.

For me, fashion is less about what you wear and more about how you work it. It’s important to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable because then it’s easy to feel confident. Confidence is a must! So, work every day like it’s a runway show!

My style is pretty diverse, and I have no problem switching it up all the time. Matching and monochromatic schemes are most definitely my thing. Monochromatic outfits are so fun and far from boring. It’s bold and edgy and allows you to highlight certain parts of your body by adding color to where you want to draw attention. For example, I might wear all white from the top to the bottom and throw in a bold red lipstick. Makeup (especially lipstick) has become my favorite part of an outfit. Earlier this year, I developed an intense love for the makeup industry, and I learned that the simple addition of a bold or soft lip can instantly change the whole look of an outfit. Don’t forget the shoes, though! Whenever I wear something, a simple switch from my Converse sneakers to my snakeskin pumps can make an outfit go from casual to edgy in a heartbeat.

Summer is, without a doubt, my favorite time of the year and my ideal season to express my style. This summer, white is definitely the new black, and I plan on wearing it all season long. I love to wear white because I think it’s classy, bold, chic, modern and perfect for bringing out that summer glow.

Fashion has spoken to me, and I hope to speak to other Fashionistas/os this summer as a Style Guru.
