STYLE GURU BIO: Alexis Houpt

How goes it, Fashionista/os?  I’m Alexis Houpt, most call me Lex, and I am a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the great city of Atlanta, Georgia!  I’m a Fashion major with a minor in Sculpture.  I love working with my hands and creating impactful art and fashion.

Oddly enough, I was not always a huge proponent of fashion.  I kind of stumbled into it my sophomore year of high school when I took a beginner’s sewing class as an elective.  I guess you could say I fell down the rabbit hole of fashion and creation. I found my passion and I stuck with it.  Since then, I have never doubted that it is the only thing I want to do for the rest of my life!

Flash forward five years and here I am!  At SCAD, everyone is so unapologetically themselves!  Each and every student here has such an individually branded and unique style (I mean, it’s art school, being stylish is basically on the syllabus).  I’m always inspired by my fellow classmates; from cerulean blue hair to deconstructed jeans and tees, and everything in between!  Everyone here tells so much about themselves just by the clothes they wear and the accessories they flaunt.

Personally, I don’t believe in having a concrete aesthetic when it comes to my style because I never want to limit myself!  Many people get so caught up in having a solid aesthetic for their look, they deprive themselves of styles they love, but won’t let themselves wear because it does not fit their “aesthetic.” Do not limit yourself. I repeat. Do not limit yourself!  It’s okay to be head to toe grunge one day, and then ’70s Woodstock chic the next!  Keep ‘em guessing!  Don’t settle and always keep surprising everyone so you don’t get stuck in a predictable fashion rut. .

I’ll leave you with this bit of advice: Use your clothing to tell a story that you can’t tell with words. Each look is a sentence in the story of your life, and make each one so exciting that you don’t want the chapter to end.

Don’t forget, follow and read my posts each month when you get a chance!  Have an amazing day as wonderful as yourself!
