STYLE GURO BIO: Christin Waites

Donatella Versace said: “Fashion is about dreaming and making other people dream.”

What’s up, my fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos? My name is Christian Waites and I plan to change the world. For now, however, I am currently a junior at La Salle University majoring in Communication and aspiring to become a fashion editor.

For me, fashion is not just a hobby or a passion, it is my escape that makes life a dream when reality may seem like a nightmare. Growing up in Philadelphia, I did not always have many role models to turn to for guidance. Because my mother and father worked endlessly to provide for my family, there were many things that I had to learn on my own through trial and error. Although I was always an artistic kid, I did not know how to channel my creativity.

Much of this changed after my first encounter with the film, The Devil Wears Prada.  Not only was I amazed at designers’ ability to use garments to craft messages that embodied specific eras and decades, but I was also inspired by Andy’s determination to overcome many obstacles in order to obtain her dream of becoming a journalist. As you read my post, you will learn very early on that I do not like to limit myself to one particular style. Because of my upbringing and love for journalism, my style changes each day in order to communicate my mood. However, I love to break the rules by adding formal pieces to everyday life. by wearing an oversized baseball shirt with hoop earrings to spice up a simple black cocktail dress. I like think that one way to describe my style is nontraditional orthodox.

Through my love for fashion journalism and CollegeFashionista, I aspire to use my dreams to help young girls identify their own style and maybe even their dreams along the way. How else do we expect to succeed in life without dream a little first?
