STYLE ADVICE: Stay Warm and Stay Cute

If there’s one thing New Yorkers know how to do, it’s layer! As a Fashionista, I know it’s really hard to stay warm and cute in the winter. Whenever the cold weather comes around, it seems like you have to sacrifice fashion for warmth, but that’s not the case at all. There are plenty of ways you can look fabulous without freezing. I know you guys see pictures of stylish girls on the streets of New York City in fashion blogs during the winter and wonder: how in the world are they not dying from hypothermia?

Living in New York for the past 15 years has forced me to come up with ways to stay warm and cute at the same time. I’m going to share some of New York City’s Fashionistas’ secrets with you. How lucky!

The most important part of an outfit during the winter is your jacket of course. This winter, the trend is a very tailored, straight and clean cut wool coat. I am 100 percent here for this; a tailored peacoat can make any outfit look classy and chic with little to zero effort. Who doesn’t love that? If you want to spice it up even more, go for a fur coat like this University of Albany freshman did. She wore a simple black T-shirt and leggings, paired with a black pair of Ugg boots. The outfit wouldn’t stand out if she didn’t layer on the gorgeous fur coat and Mcm handbag.

Regardless of what you’re wearing underneath, a fur coat will keep you cozy. It doesn’t have to be real fur of course; not only is faux fur environmentally safe, it’s safer for your wallet too!

My second tip is something that I’ve been doing for years and I’m not sure if anyone else does this but, it’s a life saver to me. Get fleece leggings or stockings to put on under your jeans or slacks. If you live somewhere cold and take public transportation you’ll love me for this I promise. Wind who? Cold what? A layer of fleece under your jeans, or a thin fleece sweater under your jacket will make a world of a difference.

Finally, wear thermal undergarments. I know it seems like taking it a little too far, but just a thermal tank and leggings can keep you from wearing that gigantic coat that ruins your whole outfit. Athletes wear thermal undergarments when they have to practice outside. It’s a thin layer, that won’t ruin the silhouette of your clothes, and will work overtime at keeping you warm.

Honestly, who wants to compromise all the hard work they did at picking out a cute outfit with some giant North Face coat? These tips are for the people who put fashion over comfort, but still care about comfort. Winter can be a hard season to get through so make sure those boots are on point, that makeup is beat to the gods, and you are slaying that coat; all will be right.
