STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Will the Real Kimono Please Stand Up?

June 12th, 2015 at 2:00am

You’ve seen girls wearing them everywhere: to festivals, music concerts and your older brother’s graduation. Kimonos are a hot trend, but seldom does one spot a Fashionista/o wearing the traditional full-length gown denoting this Japanese garment. The difference between kimonos sold in boutiques across the United States and traditional kimonos is the sash, called an obi. The real deal kimonos utilize the sash to secure the fabric around the body, while your everyday boutique kimonos are typically sans sash.

So, spotting this Fashionista in this beautiful pink kimono adorned in orchids was not unlike striking gold. The detailing makes for a very interesting and elaborate piece of garment. Keeping her top and pants one solid color allowed for this Fashionista to keep the attention all on the kimono. Additionally, her light pink bag greatly complemented the colors in the kimono.

Fortunately, this trend transitions seamlessly from spring to summer to fall. Having an item like this is priceless and hard to find. With that being said, do not be afraid to rock this bold statement piece! Kimonos say, “I’m culturally aware and also a fashion forward person.” If someone questions why you would wear something like this, kick them to the curb. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I’ve always loved Japanese culture, so my gravitation towards this kimono was natural. It was a true love story. They’re also nice because I can wear this with either a casual or formal outfit.”
