STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Velvet Underground

As we enter the last few weeks of winter and get ready to put away our sweaters, we must also part with the heavier, luxurious fabrics that rule our wardrobes. This means that it is our last chance to rock a pretty texture like velvet. Dark and mysterious, but still soft and romantic, velvet is one of my go-to fabrics for nearly any occasion. When dressed up, it feels extremely glamorous. Dressed down, it has a bohemian, vintage-inspired vibe. I found a Fashionista who mixed these two aesthetics and created a polished look with a velvet skirt.

Soft and feminine, the Fashionista’s dark red velveteen skirt felt appropriate. To help keep the skirt the focal point of her outfit, the Fashionista chose simpler, minimal pieces for the rest of her look. Her slouchy striped T-shirt is what ultimately dressed the skirt down and made it appropriate for class. Plus, black and white is always a chic combination to mix with red for extra style points.

The Fashionista then added a pair of dark red tights that coordinated with the hue of the skirt. This monochromatic combination elongated the Fashionista’s legs, while straying from the ubiquitous black tights.

Finally, the Fashionista grounded her look with a pair of black ankle booties. They appeared slightly worn out and distressed, which mixed perfectly with her T-shirt and added a cool, casual vibe to her look.

All in all, this Fashionista just proved that velvet doesn’t have to be a fussy fabric. Her unique look was classic and vintage-inspired, but still had a modern feel to it.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Juxtapose different textures and fabrics. Velvet is surprisingly versatile.”
