STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Timeless Denim

The saying, “history tends to repeat itself” holds true in the beauty and fashion world without a doubt. Watching fashion trends come back in style almost 30 years later is something I find fascinating. One item I continuously put on throughout the year is my jean jacket—an all-American classic. From the runway to every day street style, they’re in every setting. Denim jackets have been a fashion staple for decades and I can assure you, ’90s fashion lovers, it won’t be going anywhere for a while. This multi-faceted jacket can be worn any season you choose. It’s a great piece to layer with sweaters during the chillier months, can be paired with a simple T-shirt and scarf during spring and is light enough to throw over your shoulders on a breezy summer evening.

One thing I recommend when it comes to denim jacket shopping: go vintage. A slightly oversized, worn jacket is the best investment to pull off a timeless look with a little dated flare. Going vintage prevents you from looking too put together, giving you the careless vibe everyone seems to be striving for nowadays. You can find denim jackets at stores such as Urban Outfitters and Brandy Melville, but thrift stores have unbeatable price tags and the greatest assortments. You only have to be willing to hunt for the style that works for you. Sometimes, you’ll even find some with patches from the previous owners, adding a touch of unique, unexpected style.

This Fashionista stood out to me while she was shopping with friends in the city. I envy her vintage denim Levi Brand Jeans jacket she stole from her mom’s closet. To let her vintage, detailed shorts remain the focus of her appearance, she contrasts her upper half with a basic white tank top from Free People and opal necklace. As a third vintage item, she wears her mom’s vintage Coach satchel and is ready to browse boutiques for the rest of the day.

Denim jackets can pull any outfit together and come in a plethora of different styles, but if you’re taking my advice, remember that denim gets better with age.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Don’t be scared to go thrifting! You will be surprised how many bargains you’ll come across. I found my favorite pair of shorts at a Goodwill two years ago for $5 and I wear them all the time. Also, denim jackets are a perfect way to add style to your outfit, without trying too hard.”
