STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Little Black Dress

Picture this: you’re standing in front of your closet, both hands on your hips, having a hard time picking out a cute outfit for the fancy dinner you’re attending this evening. You’re skimming each piece of clothing but nothing seems to catch your eye—until your little black dress appears! You pull it from your closet with excitement, composing your entire look for the evening in minutes!

I think everyone can agree that a little black dress is necessary for any Fashionistas’ wardrobe. You can dress it up, dress it down and sing about it (One Direction, I’m looking at you!) You can wear a LBD for almost any occasion. It can be paired with your favorite heels, so you can rock your step while out on the town. Try pairing it with a blazer for work or an upcoming job interview. Don’t know what to wear? Grab your favorite pair of sneakers and a leather jacket to feel comfortable while still looking fabulous.

Some wonder, “Where does the popularity of the little black dress come from?” It turns out that in the 1920s, Coco Chanel brought the little black dress to light and made it a worldwide phenomenon when it was published in Vogue. Who knew something so simple could have so much power in the fashion world?

I think it’s safe to say that we can describe the LBD as legendary. Styles may change, but one thing remains the same. Wearing black does not have to be for bad times, or have to reflect your mood, and dresses don’t have to be just for parties and fancy occasions—it’s versatile. You can wear your LBD to class, a friend’s house, out shopping and all over!

Modeling for this look, I have my awesome roommate and fellow Style Guru, Madalynn Mershon. She is wearing my very own LBD from Express with my rosy suede GUESS pumps! And of course, we have to dress it up with a gold plated statement necklace. This look can be for a night on the town in our wonderful new home of Chicago, whether it is that fancy dinner or dancing the night away. The sheer material gives the dress an edgy look, while the necklace and heels make for a glamorous composition. She’s ready to go!

Now go out, and rock your LBD, Fashionistas!
