STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Slip Back Into the ’90s

Before I start, got to give a quick a shoutout to Queen Rihanna because I can’t spend an entire article talking about the slip dress without acknowledging the girl who invented the trend. Well I might have slightly exaggerated there, but she did revive the ‘90s staple in a way only she could and it’s the reason why I fell in love with the trend.

One of my favorite adaptations of the slip dress look is the graphic T-shirt and slip dress combination. I’m not the only who seems to think so; it’s become the fashion worlds’ favorite trend too. How could it not? The number of possible looks you could create just with that simple combination explains why the trend caught on so quickly. You can go grunge by adding a choker and platform boots. You can go classic chic by replacing the graphic tee with a solid colored tee and lace-up flats. Or, you could form an entirely new look of your own like this Fashionista I spotted at Lollapalooza.

Her look gave me major retro vibes which I blame on her Saint Laurent SL 98’s. Aside from that, you could tell she had fun mixing several different styles together. Adding the graphic tee under her blush slip dress gives a grunge twist. The Vans Sk8-Hi’s add skater vibes with a little bit of Californian influence. When it comes to accessorizing, she continues to pay homage to the ‘90s with the classic mini backpack.

At this point, I could probably write a ten page essay about why I love the slip dress and graphic T-shirt combo, but I’ll spare everyone. If I haven’t convinced you to pull out your favorite graphic T-shirt from your closet and add a slip dress to your wardrobe, than I don’t know who will. Trust me though; your future self will love you for it.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “My style advice is to not label your style because getting dressed is supposed to be fun. Mixing different trends and aesthetics is the best part of putting an outfit together.”
